THE ONLINE

SHORT COURSE IN

MINDFUL SELF-COMPASSION

(SC-MSC)

With Raphael Jay Adjani and Siri Chandler

Course Details

The Short Course in Mindful Self-Compassion (SC-MSC), is a 6-week adaptation of the empirically-supported 8-week Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) program designed to begin the cultivation of the skills of self-compassion.

The SC-MSC 6-hour program has been created to allow participants to begin to learn a targeted set of MSC practices with less initial time commitment than the full 26-hour MSC program.

The SC-MSC program cultivates Self-Compassion practices and resources, underpinned by Mindfulness.

The SC-MSC program cultivates Self-Compassion practices and resources underpinned by Mindfulness.

Self-compassion involves the capacity to comfort and soothe ourselves, and to motivate ourselves with encouragement, when we suffer, fail, or feel inadequate. Self-compassion is learned in part by connecting with our innate compassion for others and including ourselves in that circle of compassion.

Significant and growing research shows that self-compassion is strongly associated with

  • Emotional wellbeing.

  • Lower levels of stress, anxiety and depression.

  • Better coping with life challenges.

  • Healthy habits such as diet and exercise.

  • More satisfying personal relationships.

SC-MSC was developed by Kristin Neff the pioneering researcher in the field of self-compassion and Christopher Germer, PhD, a leader in the integration of mindfulness, compassion and psychotherapy.

About RE-MSC

Re-MSC is a resource for beginners, experienced practitioners and teachers of Mindful Self-Compassion or Mindfulness.

Re-MSC supports you to:

  • Deepen your conceptual understanding and practice of Mindful Self-Compassion.

  • Reflect further on ways of applying MSC to your daily life.

  • Explore other self-development concepts and practices, as well as other contemplative practices, which resonate with MSC: in order to both more expansively understand MSC, and extend life skills.

  • Connect more deeply to the core MSC component of "Common Humanity" through a community of support and sharing.

Re-MSC is an expansive space to share and learn in a community, with supportive friends. You can participate in as many sessions as serve you.

Re-MSC is open to anyone interested in Mindful Self-Compassion, who has undertaken the full MSC course or any kind of Introduction to MSC” workshop; or a Mindfulness based course anywhere in the world, with any teacher. They are not though suitable for complete beginners.

Re-MSC is facilitated by experienced teachers Raphael Jay Adjani and Siri Chandler; together with guest teachers/therapists.

Re-MSC uses Zoom. Once you have made your payment, you receive the Zoom session access link.

Each Re-MSC Session Provides:

  1. Two practices/guided exercises.

  2. Exploration of a specific monthly theme drawn from the full MSC course e.g. “Living by Our Core Values”; or a related concept and practice e.g. Emotional Intelligence.

  3. A safe and confidential space for extensive discussion in small mini-groups in the breakout rooms groups; as well as sharing of insights in the group as whole.

  4. Sharing of videos, poems and other creative material that can assist MSC understanding.

Requirements

  1. Strong and stable Internet connection.

  2. At least 10 inch Tablet or Laptop or Desktop. While it is technically possible to use a smart phone or smaller tablet, we do not recommend them, as the screen size tends to reduce the impact of group interaction and engagement.

  3. Working in a private space to ensure confidentiality.

  4. Physical pen and paper.

  5. A reasonable command of the English language.

Invitation to Collaboration

We welcome collaboration. If you are a teacher or aspiring teacher of MSC, a Mindfulness teacher, a therapist, or a teacher who facilitates related therapeutic education programs; and would like to volunteer to introduce a concept or practice in a future Re-MSC session, which could connect with MSC in some way as well as enable people to expand their thinking; you would be most welcome. Please get in touch.

As examples only, this could include: ACT Acceptance and Commitment Therapy; CFT Compassion Focused Therapy; Buddhist Psychology; Neuropsychology;  Positive Psychology; MBSR Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction; Emotional Intelligence, Non-Violent Communication, MADE Managing Anger and Difficult Emotions; Mindful Yoga, Art Therapy, Play Therapy, Dance and Movement Therapy.

RADICAL CARING GATHERING:

becoming a better friend to your self and the planet

.

The course changed my relationship to myself to a more supportive inner tone.

It helped me deal with difficult emotions as I now have skills for what to do.

- Previous Course Participant

The Course is currently taught as a 6 day residential, 8 week or online.

Course Description

Radical Caring is for everyone.

We all care.

We may be taking time to care for friends and family. We hopefully take time to care for ourselves. Some of us may be in caring professions, like health workers. Others care in their communities. Some may be activists at the forefront of caring for the planet. We propose that caring for self is a fundamental step in sustained caring for others and the planet.

The Radical Caring Gathering supports us to safely explore our caring for self, others and the planet.  Radical Caring uniquely combines proven techniques from therapeutic practices such as Compassion-Focused Therapy, Mindful-Self Compassion, and other Mindfulness processes, into a way of being that places caring centre stage as a basic need on which all life depends. Radical Caring is based on ancient wisdom alongside ideas from neuroscience and trauma related healing.

In this course we get to the heart of how it feels to meet ourselves and others with care and what gets in the way of that intention.

In a society that profits from our self-doubt liking ourselves is a Radical Act

- line adapted from a work by artist Caroline Caldwell

While Radical Caring is for everyone, it may particularly resonate with:

  •  Those who may have experienced minority stress, including LGBTQIA+, Black and Minority Ethnic community members (BAME) and other intersectional characteristics at play in our lived experience.

  • Those in healthcare professions – care workers, nurses, doctors, therapists, social workers etc.

  • Those who are carers or activists and experience compassion fatigue.

  • Being kinder to myself makes a difference to the way now I treat others, which is very important.

MINDFULNESS, ART AND CREATIVE MOVEMENT

Co-Taught with Jane Belshaw

Mindfulness, Art and Creative Movement is taught as a two hour “playshop” or a four week practical course.

It involve mindful meditation, creative movement and diverse art practices that:

  •  therapeutically approach stress, loss, sickness, injury, ageing and disability, to foster holistic wellbeing.

  • utilise all aspects of our life experiences to develop our creative and artistic expression.

Mindfulness, Art and Movement’s approach to movement, art, healing, wellbeing and recovery draws on the Japanese ceramic art practice of Kintsugi: where broken pottery is repaired with lacquer mixed with powdered gold; and the renewed object is considered to have its own beauty and richness.

Kintsugi treats the fact that we ‘break’ as part of the weave of life rather than something to disguise. It encompasses acceptance of change as a nourishing aspect of human life, contributing to its richness. Here breaks and cracks become part of a creative force that feed us artistically and therapeutically.

Our Kintsugi is the art of embracing “damage” and celebrating the “imperfect”.
